Defnitions & Resources

Definition of Afternoon Tea

Traditionally referred to in Great Britain as “Low Tea,” because of the lower sitting tables on which the food and tea is served between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m.

We do not offer afternoon tea service, food or beverage service. We have hosted some special events in the past, but are no longer offering afternoon tea events on a regular basis. Here is a sample menu of the food and tea from a former afternoon tea event:

Cheddar Shortbread with Cotija Mousse & Cilantro Pesto

Parmesan Choux Pastry filled with Chicken Salad with Gorgonzola, Toasted Walnuts and Basil

Smoked Turkey Tea Sandwich with Apricot & Cranberry Chutney with Curry Aioli

Sweet Pea Shooter with Saffron Aioli and Red Pepper Oil

Carol's Cream Scones with Lemon Curd, Clotted Cream, & Jam

Lemon Cream Cheese Bar with Blueberries

Chocolate Bread Pudding with Grande Marnier Syrup

Pain D'Amande Shortbread

TEAS: Grand English Breakfast, Organic Darjeeling, Fancy Formosa Oolong, Silver Tips White Tea,

Snow Flake Black Tea, Moroccan Mint Green Tea, Oasis Rooibos Herbal Tisane,

and Ju Hua Herbal Tisane (Chrysanthemum Blossoms)

Definition of High Tea

A term used in Great Britain for an informal meal served at about six o’clock in the evening, referring to the higher table on which the food is served. This is different from afternoon tea, since it is a substantial meal like dinner with traditional dishes such as Welsh rarebit and served at suppertime, rather than an afternoon snack.

Definition of Cream Tea

In tea culture of the United Kingdom, a cream tea consists of simply hot tea, scones, and clotted cream or other condiments for the scones. This is an informal time for guests of a household to share tea and conversation with a light snack.

Tea Embassy Tea Seminar I

Guests that attend the Tea Embassy Tea Seminar learn about tea in an interactive setting with smelling, touching, and tasting tea. You will enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the historical home in downtown Austin, while listening to the Sims family speak about tea, as you taste teas and learn to discern the flavors of each major tea category. The seminar concludes with a complimentary cream tea, giving guests a chance to visit with one another, while enjoying hot tea and scones.

Seminar topics include:
- Classifying tea
- History of tea
- Brewing different teas
- Decaffeinating your own tea
- Choosing a teapot and other tea accoutrements
- Tea etiquette
- Entertaining with tea
